What is Sulforaphane?
Sulforaphane is a naturally occurring phytochemical found in cruciferous vegetables. There are many sulforaphane-rich foods, such as broccoli, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli sprouts; however, studies have concluded that broccoli sprouts contain the highest concentration of sulforaphane.
When we eat these vegetables raw, the process of chewing releases an enzyme called myrosinase, which transforms the sulforaphane glucosinolate into sulforaphane.1
Originally discovered at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, sulforaphane has been clinically shown to activate Phase II Detoxification Enzymes, which are generally characterized as antioxidant enzymes, helping to eliminate harmful chemicals from the body.2 Since its discovery, sulforaphane has been extensively studied for its role in prevention of oxidative damage and inflammatory disorders.3
